Prisoners stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Terrance Howard.  When two young girls are kidnapped and no evidence tying the prime suspect to the missing girls can be found, a father takes matters into his own hands.

Prisoners will have you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning until the very end.  The story is compelling and will have you guessing at every turn.  It tugs at every emotion until the very end when, I promise, you will gasp out loud.  It is the best thriller I've seen in years and easily one of this year's best films.
The acting in this film was tremendous on all fronts.  Aside from Les Miserables, this is Hugh Jackman's best role to date.  He provides a powerful  and heart wrenching performance as a father willing to go to any extreme in order to find his daughter.  Jake Gyllenhaal is very good as the detective who will not give up.  This is a worthy follow up to last year's gritty crime drama, End of Watch, but Prisoners is a much better movie.  Terrance Howard is excellent.  He plays the father of the other kidnapping victim.  His emotions are dead-on in every scene as he has to defy his morals in the two men's desperate attempts to find their daughters.  Maria Bello, who plays Hugh Jackman's wife,  is exeptional in this film and she gives one of the best performances of the year so far.
The story is extremely well-written.  It has one of the best screenplays of any movie I've seen this year and really caught me by surprise.  Just when I thought I had it figured out, something else changes everything.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that I could literally feel my heart beating in my chest at the climax of the third act.
There are plenty of moments in this film that are cringe worthy and difficult to watch, but if you like thrillers, you have to see this movie!  It's the best film in this genre I've seen since Gone Baby Gone and I highly recommend it.   The only complaint that I have is I had a couple of minor questions about some of the symbolism after the movie ended.  Speaking of which, I can't remember the last time I heard an audience in a theater react in such the way they did when the credits rolled. This movie is remarkably good and will easily make my top 10 list of the Best Movies of the Year.

My grade for this film: A
On a side note: If you see this film at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown (which I highly recommend), make sure you DO NOT TALK.  Reacting to a scene in the movie, I said literally two words to a friend of mine and nearly got kicked out.  They take that very seriously.
