World War Z

WORLD WAR Z

World War Z is the highly publicized and anticipated summer blockbuster about the Zombie Apocalypse. It is based on the popular novel of the same title written by Max Brooks. This film was directed by Marc Forster(Quantum of Solace) and stars Brad Pitt (Moneyball).  The story is about a former investigator for the U.N. who is called back into service when a Zombie pandemic rapidly spreads across the globe and threatens the survival of mankind.

The story starts out slow for a brief moment and then jumps right into the action. As the film progresses the intensity is amplified and this movie ultimately turns out to be a smart, intense, and gripping thriller.  For brief moments the story stalls, but with just enough time for the audience to catch its breath before the intensity picks back up quickly.  It was paced very well and quirky moments of comic relief arrive at just the right time.

These are not the run of the mill zombies we're used to seeing in other films and television shows.  They are fast moving and relentless.  I won't lie, it's obvious that the creators toned down nearly every moment that would have ordinarily called for gruesome violence in a Zombie flick. Clearly they did this in order to keep a PG-13 rating, but to be honest, I didn't really mind it that much. The lack of gore kept the focus on the plot and drove the film to a somewhat unexpected and intelligent conclusion.  I think it was a smart move on the part of the studio to take this path by making the popular speculation of the Zombie Apocalypse available to a wider audience.

Brad Pitt did a fine job in this film. His character was low key and unpretentious, but capable when it came to taking on the zombies.  The more I think about it, the more I appreciate his performance.  I was hoping to see him be a little more of a bad ass, but it seemed he had a subtle empathetic disposition when it came to killing zombies.

Another performance worth noting was put on by newcomer, Daniella Kertsesz.  She played a Special-Ops member of the Israeli Defense Force.  Her character provided a helping hand to Gerry (Pitt) as he journeyed to find patient zero. She did a great job of being tough and effective yet scared at the appropriate times. She was very likeable from the moment she hit the screen.

My favorite performance actually came from one of the zombies. I won't give anything away, but near the end of the film, there's one particular member of the undead that adds some great comic relief while maintaining the intensity of the scene. It was probably my favorite part of the whole film.

After reports of delaying this film by 6 months in order to reshoot a missing third act, World War Z has been plagued by bad press and in turn has sent Brad Pitt on a worldwide tour to promote this film. I think whatever changes were made must have worked. The only real complaints I have about this movie was the ending was too predictable and some of the action seemed to be cut short.  Regardless of its predictability, the story is intense throughout and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you're expecting a movie version of The Walking Dead, this film is going to disappoint you. I love the Walking Dead, but I make it a point to keep an open mind when seeing new movies and as far as entertainment value goes, World War Z delivered with great special effects, high intensity, plenty of surprising and jumpy moments, a smart script, and good comic relief.  Although I don't think it's entirely necessary, with plenty of zombies and debris flying at you throughout the entire movie, it's worth a watch in 3D.

My grade for this film: A-
