THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE REPORT

Fast & Furious 6 has finally slipped from the number one spot after a strong two weeks. It may come as a shock that it was beaten this weekend by the $3 million budgeted horror-thriller, The Purge.

The Purge, starring Ethan Hawke, brought in over $36 million this weekend and was ahead of "Fast 6", Now You See Me, and The Internship. When a film with such a low budget finds this kind of success, it's no surprise to find out that a sequel is reportedly in the works.

The Internship starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson opened with a disappointing $18 million (estimated). A far cry from the success Vaughn and Wilson experienced with Wedding Crashers, which opened with over $33 million. Not only did The Internship disappoint this weekend, but it failed to beat out "Fast 6", which hit the $200 million mark with an estimated $19.7 million and Now You See Me which raked in an estimated $19.5 million.

In my opinion, The Internship was the superior movie to premier this weekend and I truly believe had the studio put out a trailer showing more of the funny parts, it probably would have taken the number one spot at the box office. It's quite a conundrum considering a lot of comedies disappoint because most of the best parts appear in the previews. This film may pick up some steam as word of mouth gets out, but it will be tough to bounce back next weekend as it will have to compete with the highly anticipated Man of Steel and the star studded comedy, This is The End.

COMING TO THEATERS THIS WEEKEND

Man of Steel is the highly anticipated reboot of the Superman franchise. It was produced by Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises) and was directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen). It stars the relative newcomer, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams (The Fighter), and Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind).
