THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE REPORT

Fast & Furious 6 kept the number one spot for the second straight week at the U.S. box office with a strong $34.5 million. This goes to show the series has a strong following and it appears to be expanding. It will be interesting to see if either The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, or the R rated horror-thriller The Purge, will be able to give "Fast 6" a run for its money this upcoming weekend. After all, it's not easy to hold the number one spot for three straight weeks. For example - Iron Man 3 fell to Star Trek: Into Darkness in the third week, but Iron Man 3 grossed more money on it's opening weekend than "Fast 6" did in two weeks. Luckily for Vin Diesel and the gang, they won't have that kind of competition and while it may be farfetched, Fast & Furious 6 just might have a chance to win the box office race for the third straight week.

Now You See Me brought in $28 million this weekend and edged out this summer's first box office dud, After Earth.  Now that most moviegoers have had the opportunity to see "Fast 6",  I find myself wondering if Now You See Me has a chance to do even better next weekend. I kind of doubt it, but who knows? It may still have something hiding up its sleeve.

M. Night Shyalaman's After Earth, the story of father and son surviving on the earth after mankind has been evacuated, was a giant disappointment at the box office this weekend. With a reported $135 million budget, it only brought in $27 million in the U.S.  and measly $2.7 million in the foreign markets. Which makes this Will Smith's first true summer blockbuster bomb and his fifth lowest opening ever. It appears in Smith's attempt to move his son Jaden to the next level, he may have in fact created a career setback instead. Jaden's last film, The Karate Kid, opened with $55.6 million and his debut film, The Pursuit of Happyness (also starring Will Smith), opened at $26.5 million (US), but only had an estimated budget of $55 million. Unless After Earth is able to gain any steam over the next few weeks, I'll be curious to see if the studio will scrap the rest of the planned trilogy and imagine Hollywood "after M. Night Shyamalan".
