The Heat

THE HEAT

The Heat was directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and stars Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Melissa McCarthy (Identity Thief). It is an odd couple/buddy cop comedy about unanimously disliked FBI Agent Ashburn (Bullock), who leaves New York to track down a homicidal drug dealer in Boston in order to earn a promotion. She is thrown for a loop when she is forced to partner with an overzealous and foul-mouthed Boston Police officer named Mullins (McCarthy).

The best way I can describe this film is it's a "chick flick" with balls. It's vulgar and ridiculous, but  funny throughout the entire movie. The story was pretty run-of-the-mill and the cinematography and action was nothing special. The thing I liked most about this movie was that I can't remember seeing another buddy cop movie starring two women.  It has a lot of the characteristics of Bridesmaids, but wasn't quite as funny.  It starts out okay and gets better as it goes.  I enjoyed this movie, but can't say it was great.

Sandra Bullock did a good job playing an uptight and condescending FBI Agent.  She had some great scenes that generated big laughs and had great chemistry with Melissa McCarthy.

McCarthy played a similar character as she did in Identity Thief.  She's crude, callous, and funny.  She has moments where she turns from the comedian we all know to a glimpse of a dramatic actress.  I enjoy her style of shock comedy and would probably see just about any movie she appears in.  While this isn't her best work, it's still a fun movie.

I say if you don't mind a little violence, mindless humor and constant crude language, have a girls night out or drag your man to the theater to see this movie. It's a crude "chick flick" that the men can enjoy as much as the ladies.

While there are some touching moments and big laughs, it's not quite in the same league as Bridesmaids. I would say, if you liked Identity Thief, you'll enjoy The Heat.

My grade for this film: B
