Box Office Report

Fast & Furious 6

Fast & Furious 6 grossed over $120 million (domestic) over Memorial Day weekend. This was by far the biggest opening of any of the Fast & Furious franchise.

Contributing Factors

"Fast 5" was better than most of its predecessors. It grossed around $85 million (domestic) on opening weekend and really re-energized the series.

I read an article in the Chicago Tribune written by Brent Lang (Reuters). In the article, he writes about how the producers of The Fast & Furious franchise decided to bring back Paul Walker and Vin Diesel's characters in the 4th film and how it saved the series from going straight to DVD after Tokyo Drift bombed so badly. He also noted that buzz on Facebook is what prompted the makers of Fast & Furious to bring back Michelle Rodriguez's character in the most recent installment of the series.

I think another big contribution to the success of the series is when they brought in Dwayne Johnson as Agent Hobbs. Although, his last two films, G.I. Joe Retaliation and Faster, didn't do that great, in the right movie, he can bring a lot of people to the box office. In this case, it was pretty obvious they made the right call.

In my opinion, the biggest contributing factor is that the series has developed a strong following. I think as long as they keep pumping out these films, the fans will return to the theater and apparently, in increasing numbers. I'm not one to have spoilers in my articles, so I won't say too much, but if you've seen "Fast 6" and stayed for the credits, one might guess the next installment may even do better.

When you have big stars like Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, fast cars, tons of action, and slutty women, it's no surprise that "Fast 6" was destined to be a big box office hit.

According to an article from The Wrap written by Todd Cunningham, the biggest contributing factor may have be the diversity of the audience.

The Hangover III and EPIC, didn't exactly bomb over the record breaking Memorial Day weekend, but it may take a few weeks for these two films to find box office success.

The Hangover III

The Hangover III grossed about $51 million (domestic) this weekend, not nearly as strong as the second one did at $85 million. My guess is that because the second one was so disappointing, most moviegoers didn't want to take a chance on the third. I'll be the first to admit, when I heard there was going to be another one, I thought, Are you kidding me?  After seeing it, I will say it was much better than the second, but not as good as the first.

EPIC

Epic did about $44 million (domestic), less than half of its reported $100 million budget (Box Office Mojo). It may have failed to turn heads on opening weekend because it wasn't getting great reviews. Maybe a lot of the families were out of town visiting relatives this weekend. Maybe word spread that the title was too grandiose for this film. Who knows? I'm guessing if it had gotten rave reviews and major buzz more people would've thought, Maybe this movie is "Epic", and would've gone out to see it. This film is bound to have success over the coming weeks as it's the only new family film scheduled to be released until Monster's University hits theaters on June 21st.

Coming to theaters this weekend

This weekend we have M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth, starring Will and Jaden Smith and Now You See Me,  a film about a gang of bank robbing magicians.

After Earth

I'm pretty skeptical of After Earth --- I have not liked any of Shyamalan's films since Signs. I thought The Village, Lady in the Water , and The Happening were all train wrecks. In my opinion, it's nearly impossible for a director to come out and hit a grand slam on his first major film (The 6th Sense) and follow it up with anything comparable --- unless, of course, you're Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception). I think it'd be nothing short of a miracle if Shyamalan ever made a film anywhere near as good as The 6th Sense. To be fair, I never saw The Last Airbender, but it got terrible reviews.

Now You See Me

In my opinion, Now You See Me  looks great. I really like Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Mark Ruffalo (Shutter Island), and Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby). It appears to have a unique storyline and I'm sure I'll be a sucker for illusionists gone criminal.

Also, At Any Price starring Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron is scheduled to hit the art houses this weekend. I've seen this film and my review will be posted on Friday morning on my blog. http://www.mix93.com/pages/16393587.php?
