Stuck in Love was written and directed by newcomer, Josh Boone. It stars Greg Kinnear (As Good as it Gets), Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), Lilly Collins (Mirror Mirror), and Kristen Bell (Get Him to the Greek). This is a touching and dramatic, romantic comedy about a broken family and their different philosophies and experiences through the many different stages of love.
With a terrific cast and marvelous performances, the acting was by far the best thing about this movie. Greg Kinnear was tremendous. I love how natural and down-to-earth he appears to be in nearly every single one of his movies. In this film, he plays an award-winning novelist who has essentially manufactured his children into following his footsteps as writers. His character struggles through a bout with writer's block while trying accept the fact that his ex-wife is not coming back. His married friend-with-benefits played by Kristen Bell works to convince him to get back into the dating pool and conquer his denial about his ex-wife.
Jennifer Connelly put on a wonderfully sincere performance as the recently remarried ex-wife, who wants nothing more than to win back a relationship with her daughter played by Lilly Collins.
Collins was great! She plays a jaded college student who wants absolutely nothing to with the concept of finding true love. Her character is celebrating the publishing of her first novel while trying not to be swept away by a genuine "nice guy", played by Logan Lerman (Gamer). Lerman was outstanding in this film. He would have stolen the entire show had Kinnear, Collins, and Connelly not also put out such excellent performances. I absolutely loved his extreme likability and the charming nature of Lerman's character.
Nat Wolff (New Year's Eve) was exceptional as Kinnear's son. His character is an aspiring writer and hopeless romantic, who is obsessed with the popular "girl next door" played by Liana Liberato (Tresspass). She put on a very good performance as a drug addicted and alcoholic high school student who is stuck in an dysfunctional relationship with the a jock played by Patrick Schwartzenegger (Benchwarmers).
Stuck in Love is a small and heartfelt story and although it is fairly predictable and the climaxes are not exactly earth-shattering, it's a fun movie with great performances and provides some interesting insights into the ordeals of life, family, and love. This film is dramatic, touching, and has great comedy.
If you liked Crazy, Stupid Love or Love Actually, surely you will enjoy this movie.
My Grade for this film: B+
