My full review:
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
Silver Linings Playbook was directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter) and stars Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone), and Robert De Niro (Meet the Parents). It is based on the novel with the same title written by Matthew Quick. The story follows Pat Solitano (Cooper) a recent divorcee who was court ordered to spend 8 months in a mental institution after an attack on his ex-wife's new boyfriend. Pat moves in with his parents (Jackie Weaver, Robert De Niro) and creates a plan to reconcile with his ex-wife. When he is introduced to Tiffany (Lawrence), a troubled widow, his world is turned upside down.
Bradley Cooper has never been better and rightly so, he earned his first Academy Award nomination for this film. His character is fighting a constant battle to prove he's been rehabilitated as he struggles to control his wild temper. All the while, his new positive outlook on life is challenged at every corner.
Jennifer Lawrence was outstanding and earned her first Academy Award for best actress. She plays a foul mouthed, tough and brutally honest widow. Her character has taken up dating and dancing as a form of therapy to deal with the tragic death of her husband.
Together Lawrence and Cooper were brilliant. They had great chemistry and were the perfect choices for this film.
De Niro was great in this film as Pat's father. His character is very complex. He plays a gambling addict who is obsessed with the Philadelphia Eagles and has been banned from the stadium. His relationship with his son is filled with conflict, creating a constant struggle for his wife to keep the peace.
This is not a typical romantic comedy. It's gritty and courageous. The story was refreshing and inspiring. The directing was great and the acting was superb. It's laugh out loud funny and the drama is excellent.
My Grade for this film: A
