On Tuesday I had the opportunity to sit down with Rocket and Toby (Mr. Lunch). Toby recommended we watch a documentary called Searching For Sugar Man and since then I cannot stop thinking about this documentary and I had to write a review.
SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN
The Academy Award Winning documentary is about Detroit musician, Rodriguez. Who in the 1970's, was considered one of the most promising singer songwriters in Rock and Roll history. After his first two albums flopped in the United States, Rodriguez disappeared from the face of the earth. While rumors circulated about a horrible suicide carried out on stage, Rodriguez became a legend in Cape Town, South Africa. His lyrics and soul piercing vocals made a wave through South Africa and helped fuel a revolution. Search For Sugar Man is an inspiring journey of two South African men and their quest to find out what truly happened to the mysterious and brilliant Rodriguez.
Watch this trailer and tell me you don't want to watch this right now!
First off, the story in this documentary is so unbelievable, I've been walking around for the last day wondering, "Have I been had?" I just can't believe it's true, but according to the story, it is. It's unbelievable that something like this can actually happen, but as they say, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Either way, if you like music, any music at all, you will immediately appreciate the talent Rodriguez had.The music to me, is the number one thing that makes me believe this story is true. It's simply wonderful. Rodriguez was an amazing poet and guitarist. His voice was reminiscent of Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, even Buddy Holly at times, but he still had a sound that was all his own. Rocket said it best when he commented that Rodriguez really captured the sound of the seventies.
The story of how these two men came to track down the fate of this mysterious star is absolutely inspiring and unbelievably magical!!!
I'm so glad Toby recommended this movie to us. This is one of the best music stories I've ever seen.
This is a must see!!! Searching For Sugar Man is available on DVD.
