Rush is the exhilarating true story of the famous rivalry in the 1970's that took place between Formula 1 Racing icons Niki Lauda and James Hunt. This film was brilliantly directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) and very well acted by Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Daniel Brühl (Inglorious Basterds).
First off, if you're not a fan of Formula 1 or Nascar, there's no need to worry with Ron Howard behind the wheel. Rush is an extremely well told story and while it does capture the golden era of Formula 1, it's not just about the races. This movie provides a look at true and pure competition between outstanding competitors. The manner in which Ron Howard recounted the story of Lauda versus James, brilliantly demonstrated how far these men were willing to go in order to prove they were the best Formula 1 drivers in the world. So even if you're not into auto-racing, which I'm not, you will still enjoy this film. It belongs on the list of one of the greatest sports movies of all time.
Chris Hemsworth was perfectly casted as the fearless James Hunt and he put out a marvelous performance. He is truly talented and even though I really enjoyed his performances in The Avengers movies and Snow White and the Huntsman, it was nice to see him in a role that allows him to show more of his range.
Daniel Brühl as the brilliant and calculating Niki Lauda was tremendous in this film. He was such a great character to watch. You'll despise him at the beginning, but you'll grow to like and respect him over the course of the story. I've never seen him in a role this size, but his performance was incredible and could be worthy of an Oscar nomination.
The story was very interesting and pulls you in many different ways. It was tough to know who to root for at times because each character was so real and truly fascinating. The cinematography and style was fantastic and the racing sequences were nail biting.
There were a few moments here and there that seemed to drag a little bit, but with Oscar caliber screenwriting, directing, and performances, this is definitely one of the best movies of the year and I highly recommend it.
My grade for this film: A
