SALINGER

SALINGER

Salinger is a documentary that deeply explores the life of the reclusive author of Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger.

It is fascinating to see the whole story of how Salinger became a published writer and what hardships he went through during the decades he spent working on Catcher in the Rye.  It is intriguing and a little crazy to see how fans would seek out his advice on their problems.  Most times it seemed they identified with the thought processes of his characters and thought he would have some life altering words to help them through their internal battles.  I can only imagine how this must have driven him further away from the public.

There are many compelling stories from the people that knew him during the different periods of his life. The accounts of his life give clues to his thought processes and characteristics that would otherwise remain a mystery. These stories are very well told and I found them to be highly interesting.

Even though J.D. Salinger himself would likely hate this documentary, I truly believe it is necessary to explore the man's life and work.  His words have affected millions of lives in good and horrible ways, including multiple acts of violence that were attributed to Catcher in the Rye.  Salinger is truly one of the most influential and mysterious figures in literary history and this documentary covers it all.

I believe a lot of people would side with Salinger and dislike this documentary out of respect of his lifestyle and ideals, but  I thought it was tasteful and made with respect.   I believe the makers did everything they could to explore who we was and why he lived his life the way he did.  They did a good job of tracking down the influences in his life and the experiences that inspired his works.

Sure this documentary is a little slow for the most part, but it's very informative. The few things that have come to light that were not known prior to this documentary are worth the watch and I definitely recommend it.

My grade for this film: B+
