Now You See Me is a lot of fun and a must-see!
My full review:
NOW YOU SEE ME
Now You See Me was directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) and has a remarkable cast of Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Woody Harrelson (Zombieland), Mark Ruffalo (Shutter Island), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Isla Fisher (The Great Gatsby), Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), and Michael Caine (The Dark Knight). It is a story of a 4 illusionists who consistently elude the FBI as they publicly heist banks during their performances.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was highly entertaining and had surprises at every corner. I thought the story was well thought out and well executed. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of detail that was involved as each facet of the story was unveiled. I felt the screenwriters were two steps ahead of the audience during the entire film. At times, I thought it was going to be predictable, but I couldn't have been more wrong.
I was discussing the film with a friend of mine and I told him that I wouldn't be surprised if there was a magician involved in writing the story. He turned me on to an article written by Angela Watercutter from Wired.com. In the article, she reports that David Kwong, a Harvard graduate with a degree in magic studies, was brought on as a consultant very early in the production.
Here's a link to the article (this article contains spoilers):
Jesse Eisenberg was great as a popular street magician. He really brings a presence to the screen that demands attention. Woody Harrelson was a perfect fit as the mentalist of the group. He added a lot of comedy to the movie and I really enjoyed his character. Mark Ruffalo was outstanding as an FBI agent who is constantly tormented by the group as they manage to thwart his attempts to catch them throughout the story. I find myself liking Ruffalo more with every role that he plays. Dave Franco plays a professional pick pocket. This is easily the best role of his young career. Isla Fisher is a stage illusionist and does a great job in this film as well. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, of course, were both terrific...as one would expect.
Sure this movie isn't perfect by any means. It's a little farfetched at times. There are some slow spots here and there and a few times where things seem to work out very conveniently, but this film does not disappoint. It has great action, good comedy, a fantastic cast, with an original storyline and a surprising twist that you'll never see coming.
Trust me on this one and go see this movie!!!
If you liked The Italian Job, The Heist, or The Prestige, you will definitely like this movie.
My grade for this film: A-
Mr. Movies - Wes Horner
As an added bonus, check out the first scene of the film below. It starts off with a card trick. Does he pick your card? Everyone I've spoken to, picked the same card.... Pretty freaky!
