Monsters University

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

Monsters University is the computer animated prequel to Disney/Pixar's hit Monster's, Inc.  It features the voices of Billy Crystal (Analyze This),  John Goodman (Flight),  Steve Buscemi (The Big Lebowski), and Helen Mirren (RED).  The story takes us back to the beginning of Mike Wazowski (Crystal) and James P. Sullivan's (Goodman) relationship during their college days.

The 3D animation in this film was outstanding and the attention to detail was remarkable.  The story was creative, although at times, tended to drag a little.  Some of the comedy could have been executed a little better, but there were definitely funny moments.  The new characters were  likeable and it was fun to see the familiar faces from the original Monsters, Inc.

The voice acting was terrific.  Billy Crystal was his likeable self as the small, one-eye,  green monster.  John Goodman proved, once again, that he has a great voice for animation.  He began as an unlikeable frat boy wannabe who planned on riding the coattails of his father's reputation.  Eventually, he transitioned into the big and scary, but softhearted character we all came to love in Monsters, Inc.  Helen Mirren was a great addition to the cast and was especially good as the intimidating dean of the university.

While  I enjoyed myself throughout most of the movie,  I will say this film doesn't quite live up to its predecessor.  I don't expect that will matter too much and I predict this movie won't have any trouble finding success at the box office.

This is definitely the best animated feature in theaters right now.  It's a fun film that the whole family can enjoy.  Keep in mind, however,  most of the older children in the theatre seemed to enjoy it,  while some of the younger children seemed frightened at times.

Make sure you arrive prior to the feature presentation in time to see a very charming short film entitled The Blue Umbrella.

There's also a funny little clip after the credits that you may want to stick around for.

My grade for this film: B+
