Mr. Lunch Kansas City - Mix 93.3

Hawg Jaw Fritz

BBQ in Kansas City can be a tricky business.  Many have come and gone.  Some of the ones that have gone had been pretty good.  So, when Rocket said let's go to lunch in Riverside, I have a BBQ place you need to check out, I was there.  Hawg Jaw Fritz started out in BBQ contests and did quite well (the American Royal trophies are in the ordering area) and decided to venture into catering and this restaurant.  Originally a gas station, the original format was carryout only.  After a little modification, tables were added.  When you walk in you are greeted by the workers in a glad to see you kind of way.  They take your order and then call your name when it is ready.  Pretty simple format that works very well with little waiting.  The 2 dining areas are very clean and bright with somebody from the staff on the floor almost all the time checking to make sure everything is clean and that customers are happy.  Now for the food. I ordered the "Working Folk's Special".  Which is a drink, a side (beans, slaw, fries, etc) and your choice of meat.  I went with the pork.  (The selections are sausage, brisket, ends, pork, ham or turkey.)   Everything was great.  The pork was moist and flavorful with just the right amount of smoke.  The fries, and I can be critical of most fries, were great.  Rocket had the ends sandwich and also gave it high marks.  Pricing is $7 and up.  My meal cost right around $10.  We were there on a Tuesday and the line usually had around 5 people in it at all times, but it moves very quickly, so it is easy to get in and out over your lunch hour.  Hawg Jaw Fritz's is easy to get to.  It is just up the street from Red X on the east side of the street.  You can get there in 5 minutes from the Broadway Bridge.  Hawg Jaw Fritz 4403 NW Gateway Avenue Riverside, MO 64150 Phone: (816) 741-4294

MR. LUNCH KC reviews The North Kansas City Cafe

MR. LUNCH KC

I was driving through North Kansas City and saw a sign that said Gyros and Greek salad. The thought of a Gyro sounded pretty good to me, so I stopped. I had been to this building many times before, but never as The North Kansas City Café., and I hope that this one can thrive.

The North Kansas City Café has a wide selection of Greek food and standard American fare. I had the Gyro and Greek Salad. The salad was very fresh and had a nice hint of fresh mint in the Greek dressing. I would have preferred the feta cheese crumbled or chunked rather than shredded however. But that was minor and a total personal preference. The gyro was very good. The gyro meat was thick, moist and flavorful. Some places seem to serve it thin and dried out. They had a lamb burger on the menu. Next time I will try that. Overall the food was very good.

The atmosphere was clean and bright. The server I had was nice and attentive. I counted around 65 table seats so you will have plenty of room. The prices for lunch varied from $6.50 to $10.00, so it won’t break the wallet either. I overheard a conversation saying that they will be opening a bakery in the back shortly.

The North Kansas City Café is a nice alternative to Chappell’s and First Watch for lunch (and is right across the street).

The Golden Ox review by Mr Lunch Toby Proctor

The Golden Ox is an old time staple of Kansas City steak houses. But it does a decent lunch business.
They have had some ups and downs over the last 10 years. I think they are back on the upswing. The lunch menu is varied and has everything from a smoked chicken salad to steaks. The service is a little on the slow side, so you will need more than an hour for lunch. But the food is good. I had the steak sandwich medium rare. It was not a real thick cut, but they did a fine job of getting it as close to medium rare as possible. A couple of the people I ate with had the tenderloin sandwich and liked it a lot. Also, the burnt end sandwich got rave reviews. (I was in a group of 7) We did all comment that we miss the backdoor deli they used to have years ago. Prices are between $8 to $15 bucks. As long as you have 90 minutes for lunch, this is a fine place to go. It has a dated look, but that is part of its charm. It is an old time KC tradition.

MR. LUNCH KC visits Franks on Southwest Boulevard

MR. LUNCH KC

Do you like a good hot dog? Franks on Southwest Boulevard could be your place. From a traditional dog with mustard and ketchup to a Chihuahua Dog that has beans, onions and cheese sauce. My favorites are the Chicago Dog (mustard, onion, neon green relish, tomatoes, dill pickles, sport peppers and celery salt) and the Sheboygan (sauerkraut and deli mustard). Prices for a regular hot dog start at $2.49 and go up to $6.99 for the extra-large. I usually go with two of the regular. The first time I had two of the next size up and it was too much food. The quality of the hot dogs is good. The real choice is what you are going to put on it. They have 9 choices of hot dogs. Plus they have brats, Italian Sausage, Polish Sausage, veggie brats and hamburgers. Your food is made to order and is served within a few minutes after ordering. The service is quick, very friendly and helpful for those who are not sure what they want. The restaurant is clean and bright.

A few months ago, Franks moved to its new location on Southwest Boulevard from its previous location across from the Golden Ox. This location should be more convenient to more people. It has seating for about 40 people inside and drive up service for those who choose not to eat there. Parking is also pretty easy with both lot and street parking.
