Cloud Atlas is now available on DVD
Cloud Atlas was directed by Lana & Andy Wachowski (The Matrix), and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). It is based on the novel by David Mitchell and shares the same title as the film. It stars Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) and Halle Berry (Monster's Ball). This film follows the souls of 6 individuals as they reincarnate throughout the centuries.
This movie has a running time of 172 minutes and takes place in the past, present, and future. It ambitiously follows 6 separate storylines through 6 very different times periods and honestly, I felt like I was watching 6 different movies; 3 of which I enjoyed. Due to the many storylines, I found it tough to get behind most, if not any, of the characters.
There are some amazing visuals and special effects. There's comedy, drama, and action. The makeup is superb. The acting is great, but I just didn't like this film. I can't say it's a bad movie, but it was highly confusing and I believe one would have to view it many times to try and understand it. Don't get me wrong, I love long movies and even films that make your mind work hard, but I really don't have much interest in taking the time to figure out this one.
I can't think of another film like this one, but I truly DO NOT believe many people will enjoy it.
My Grade for this film: C+
