He was best known for his role as Tony Soprano in the hit HBO series The Sopranos for which he won 3 Emmy's and 1 Golden Globe. He was a tremendous actor and touted an impressive resume with The Sopranos, Broadway, and nearly 50 films including: True Romance, Crimson Tide, Get Shorty, A Civil Action, The Mexican, Killing Them Softly, and Zero Dark Thirty.
Every time I saw him in a movie, I smiled and knew that even if the movie wasn't great, I would at least get to see a good performance from Gandolfini. He always seemed so real in how he humanized each character in every role he played. It's a very sad day as the television and film industry has lost one of today's great actors.
HBO made the following statement in regards to his death: "We're all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family. He was a special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth, and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us."
