The year was 1996 when the Coca-Cola Company had the genius idea to produce the epic brand of soda called "Surge" to compete with "Mountain Dew."
As I recall, the first Surge commercials aired during the Super Bowl and featured a whole bunch of teenaged boys wrestling and struggling with each other to see who could get to the top of a hill first to capture the bottle of Surge.
Hopefully you remember Surge, although it apparently wasn't produced in a few states. It was Coca-Cola's second attempt at taking on Pepsi's Mountain Dew head to head (after "Mello Yello" mostly failed). The soda was technically branded to capture younger teens and get them hooked on Surge over Mountain Dew before late teen-hood, but the problem was that many parents (who bought the household groceries for that age group) believed it to be pure sugar and a lot worse than Mountain Dew. Multitudes of schools banned it, too, though coincidentally enough, it actually had LESS caffeine and sugar than Mountain Dew.
But anyway, why do I bring all this up?
Because a cult-like underground movement has driven Coca-Cola to PRODUCE SURGE AGAIN!!! So once more, you can order a "12'er" of the amazing soda.
Don't go looking at stores, however. The only place (at the moment) to enjoy the nostalgia of Surge, which was discontinued in 2003, is on Amazon.
I am like a little kid... on Christmas.... with loads of sugar... and presents!!!!!
The ROYALS are THE STORY of national baseball writers, as they square off with Detroit this weekend at "The K." All three games are sold out - all three are on national TV - and if KC wins 2, they'll be tied for first place with 7 games to go. Win all 3? Be two games ahead with 7 to go!!
The stakes couldn't be any higher, and neither could my blood pressure. :)
Cheryl Tiegs, a former super model from the 70's, is completely drunk, in the Minnesota Twins radio broadcast booth. She's supposed to be taking about a charity event they're doing - and she does, briefly. But mainly, its about completely RANDOM topics...
My alarm clock went off around 9:30 AM on 9/11/2001. I was a junior at the University of Nebraska and was waking up for class. Before I even knew what was going on, I could tell something was HORRIBLY WRONG from the morning show on the radio station I worked for. They were in all news coverage and there was somberness out of them that I'd never heard.
Within 5 minutes, I pieced together what had happened - it was difficult, because at that time, terrorism was something that we saw in the movies, for the most part, and not on American Soil. At least not to that level.
Even 13 years later, I can't comprehend what happened that day. It's so impossible to grasp how there can be so much evil in the world and how that evil can feel that they are allowed to end innocent lives of so many and besides that, destroy families. It's so, so sad. So, so senseless. And so, so hard to believe. It's a tragedy that will NEVER fade in the hearts of Americans and so many people of different cultures and continents around the world. WE WILL NEVER FORGET. We will STAND TOGETHER.
On this day, I think of those we lost that day... there parents... wives.... husbands.... children..... friends.... co-workers.... and I say a prayer but more than that, SEND STRENGTH to everyone involved.
And really, we are ALL involved. We are in this together.
I'm sure you've heard by now that J-Law, Ariana, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst & many others had their photos hacked off of iCloud by some weirdo and published all over the Internet. I find it quite scary and sad that these personal life situations were taken advantage of by somebody and revealed to the world. Upton and J-Law have vouched to prosectute to the fullest extent of the law, with the FBI currently investigating. More info below.
As I mentioned last week, its so exciting to see that the world is starting to catch on, too. We've had THREE games on national TV this week alone - this past Monday and Tuesday and comin' up Sunday, ESPN's National Game of the Week on Sunday Night Baseball!
I am honored, humbled and excited to be one of the emcees for tomorrow mornings (Thursday 8/27) "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Kick-off Breakfast. For the second straight year, myself and Carolyn Long from KCTV5 will be doing our small part in helping to attack the horrible disease of breast cancer. It affects all of us, either directly or indirectly, and this is a very powerful cause that I'm very passionate in helping out.
If you're there tomorrow, can't wait to see you!
If not, keep it on Mix and/or check out the American Cancer Society to see how you to can help "make it a year with more Birthdays" for all of those affected by these horrible disease.
I enjoyed having lunch today (Thursday 8/14) at the Dairy Queen in Lee's Summit on "Miracle Treat Day!"
Hopefully you can do the same as you head home from work - have a blizzard, HELP THE KIDS!!!
And this isn't just at the Lee's Summit DQ, it's all over the metro.
That's right, its the annual Dairy Queen fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network, where a portion of each blizzard at participating DQ locations goes to support CMN hospitals, including KU Med Pediatric.
I have GOT to put in a plug for my beloved Royals, who currently sit in FIRST PLACE on August 13th after winning 16 of their last 20 games! This has been a truly amazing run and the best part is - I think they have a VERY GOOD CHANCE at winning the A.L. Central and finishing in first place! That would snap a 29 year playoff drought. I think this is very doable because the Royals have a VERY easy schedule from here on out. If they play up to their ability, they control their own destiny!
Cheers to the Boys In Blue and an exciting finish to this summer, as well as baseball deep into fall!
This is incredibly sad and hits me very hard... From Patch Adams to Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo to Mrs. Doubtfire... Robin Williams was one of the best. Barnone. And had some KC connections, too.
Depression is a very, very REAL DISEASE. It can take over ones body and make them feel paralyzed and hopeless. Remember you aren't alone in your battle and hopefully, some lives can be saved from this tragedy that Robin has encountered from more attention being spotlighted on mental health. Unfortunately sometimes, this is what it takes for that to happen.
God Bless you and your family Robin - RIP - you'll be missed.
So think back to last year when "The Fox" was re-done on the trombone by a Kansas farmer! This made him go viral and here we are again, in 2014, with the same thing happening.
This time, he has played "Royals" by Lorde on the trombone and when you watch this video, all of a sudden, slowly but surely, the entire herd of cows show up. They must enjoy the song quite a bit, because they respond when he pauses. Absolutely classic! Click below.
First, the bad news, as she is splitting up with her husband, which obviously has her in a difficult place in life (read below).
The good news is, it's inspired her to do an album - her first since 2007! Hard to believe it's been seven years.
I have met Hillary a couple of times and she was always very gracious, sweet and down to earth. I believe she married for all of the right reasons and does most things in her life the same way - I truly do wish her the best and admire her!
The Australian group "5 Seconds of Summer" did something really cool - they dressed up as Target workers recently and attempted to sell copies of their CD to unsuspecting shoppers! Haha.
This reminds me of the time, back in 2005, that I hung out with 50 Cent the day that his CD came out and we called Best Buy locations around town and asked if they had his album in stock yet. When they weren't sure or said no, he went off on them over the phone. Classic stuff.
Check out this article with details of the 5 Seconds of Summer prank!
The linked video will likely make you smile, laugh and cry.
A poor bride-to-be saw her Dad tragically pass away six months before her wedding day. So the question became not only HOW she would get through the tough time but also, who would walk her down the aisle?
As it turned out, it was her favoite college team's mascot. Watch below!
I just wanted to THANK YOU for lighting up my day and making me laugh with your hitchhiking stories today (Friday) on the 5 O'Clock Soundoff.
The following were my favorite:
-Amy from Lee's Summit was at Pike's Peak in Colorado after a foot of snow and BY HERSELF, picked up two backpackers who were lost from hiking. She lived to tell about it.
-Jenna from Leawood has a friend who MET HER HUSBAND hitchhiking to work every single day in the Mountains of Colorado (notice a theme here about CO)? Apparently the dude was a model and gave her a ride to work. No idea why she didn't invest in a bike or city bus service?? :)
-Chris from the U.S. Army (THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE) picked up a guy outside of Fort Hood. They picked up another veteran, who asked for money and then proceeded to blow it gambling. There was nearly a big fight.
There were lots more that aren't airable or writeable, if you know what I mean. But again, thank you for reaching out to me at 816-576-7093, on twitter.com/daveo933 and facebook.com/daveoradio . You make my day!
Have a great weekend and if you see this woman hitchhiking..... to quote "Dumb & Dumber.." "Pick her up!!!"
I'd just like to wish you a Happy and safe 4th of July weekend, from me, KC and Tippy (the cats)!
I hope you are able to spend time with your family, relax a bit and remember what this Holiday weekend is all about - celebrating America's Birthday and the awesome freedoms and possibilities that exist because of our forefathers, millitary, etc. We truly do live in the best country in the world and are all very fortunate.
So not only is Macklemore completely amazing for tackling "social issues" and being brave enough to take a stand on them, but he also is.... (ready for this???)... a CAT lover!!!
We mentioned this before, but he's officially taken it to a whole new level with his cat, Cairo, having his own Instagram account!
This hits home for me, because back in 2006, the late great Mama Kiki (my old calico cat) had her own MySpace page. It was a big emabrassment to me because she would log on late at night when she was drunk and high on cat nip and make weird updates. So far, KC and Tippy haven't learned how to sign up for Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages...... YET.
Some facts about this winning streak for you to impress your friends or co-workers with:
-The Royals have won double digit games in a row for the first time since 1994.
-In 1994, they won 14 in a row.
-This is the latest in a year that the Royals have been in first place since 2003.
-They were last in first place on this date in............... 1980!!!
His name is Aaron Schneider. Been in the U.S. Army, first of all (THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE)! Then, he witnessed a beagle getting hit by a car on Tuesday, on busy Highway 470 in Lee's Summit, when he RISKED HIS LIFE AGAIN to cross into traffic and get this dog off the road. Sit with it three hours. And the rest is history.
Listen at 4:30 on this Friday to hear him join us on Mix AND check out the story below from our friends at Fox 4.
See the below link to view for yourself - but "plus size models" have begun the fight to show off what real sized women look like. I put "plus size models" in quotations because these women really don't appear to be what you would consider "plus size.' They are beautiful, just as everyone is, in their own way.
Take a look and see what you think - but good for these women for showing off "their plus sizes." (Ridicolous term)
The following article scares the heck out of me, especially for women in the KC Metro. We all know and hear about the "date rape drug," and to be upfront and clear, we are NOT sure this is what happened in the below case. However, it would seem from the article below that it very well may have been a case of this.
A 33 year old KC woman went out to a few clubs last night and woke up, alone, with a man, in an abandoned house. He quickly left her and she has no memories of how she got there or what happened once she arrived in Westport. I find this incredibly scary and feel bad for women that they even have to consider this when they go out - but it seems that more and more, it's something to be taken very seriously and not lightly.
I hope they find out what happened to this woman and if there was a crime that occurred, they find the man responsible for it. This is very sickening to me.
I've gotta tell you, it has really hit home for me how many lives we are changing with Co-Worker Cash. That's beacuse we actually DELIVER THE CASH TO YOU that you win, by listening five times each weekday (during the hours of 8, 10, 12, 2 & 4). And seeing the excitement... hearing how the money will be spent... is really rewarding to me. I've heard things from "helping to pay for a honeymoon" to "paying off my credit card" to "my husband and I are taking a weekend vacation to Colorado!" Trust me, I'm fully aware that you've probably tried to play and win radio contests before, and never win... I know its frustrating.. I was there in a past life. But this is the easiest contest EVER. All you have to do is sign up on this very website and listen for your name - call back and win. It's that simple.
Hope to see YOU soon, with a wad of cash in hand for YOU. Thanks for listening and have a great weekend!
You know I love my freaking cats, so of course I'm gonna be in heaven the last week, as we've heard two amazing things about cats.
First, there was "hero cat" in California, who selflessly protected a little boy from an attack dog that would become euthanized. This was captured on home video and has since (rightfully so) gone viral.
Now, there's a cat that CLIMBS MOUNTAINS with its owner. This might be even cooler! Check it out below.
To be specific, former CO-HOST of "Dancing With The Stars" Brooke Burke-Charvet, who let it slip last night that basically, she thinks Erin was a debacle of a hire....
I don't mean to hate on Erin; she's had quite the successful journey. But I tend to agree with Brooke - I just have never been a fan. To me, there's always been a bit of an ego and stuckupedness about her - I can't really explain it. Just not a big fan, and that's coming from somebody who adores about 85% of sideline reporters.
Anyway, just mine, and Brooke's, two cents. Click below for more.
Okay first of all, I'm a self admitted romantic and very nostalgic. I like to think of things in beautiful and peaceful terms, and romanticize them, too. So that might explain why I both love and hate driving by these old, deserted, run down KCMO schools that continue to sit empty.
Schools like Westport High School (below), the Horace Mann School (recently torn down), Valentine School (on SW Trafficway), Blenheim Elementary (off of Gregory and HWY 71), etc, etc. They all look like they had so much character and strength, and its easy for me, as I drive by, to imagine all of the lives they touched. All of the people who passed through there, and all of the halls and playgrounds and parking lots that were once full of people, cars and dreams.
It's neat to imagine these schools once hustling and bustling, and kind of fun to try and imagine a different time. But sad now in that they sit empty, mainly because of lack of funding and tough times that continue to face the KC MO school system.
If you happen to be reading this and went to one of these schools, or have memories of them, I'd love to hear from you, either right here on the comments section of this page or via email, email@example.com .
In the meantime, I'll keep driving past them and dreaming.
She will THROW OUT THE FIRST PITCH at a Bakersfield Blaze minor league baseball game - its now confirmed. HAHHAHA. I have been laughing all day. I'm not sure how they'll do it but I'm assuming they will hold her about a foot above the catchers mit and have the owner put her paw on a ball, that will then drop into the catcher's mitt? I can't wait to see video, as I'm sure TMZ or the team itself will post.
For a cat lover like me, I'm just soaking this all up!
Solange Knowles gets physically violent with Jay-Z in a hotel elevator, while Beyonce and a Bodyguard standby and try to calm things down. This video was obtained by TMZ and taken directly from hotel footage - 3:30 in length.
2. Does this change how you view Jay, Beyonce and family at all? They seem like a perfect couple, afterall. Big deal or no big deal at all?
Very interesting and we're awaiting comments from the parties involved, which is probably none of our business but thanks to media outlets by TMZ, has become our business in 2014.
She's in the process of most likely, death, toward the end of life, and she partakes in one of the coolest ideas I've ever heard, writing HAND WRITTEN (old school) letters to completely random people around the world who need them.
Today I read about two teenage girls in New Jersey who put a KITTEN (similar to the one below) in a MICROWAVE, on video, laughed and shared it with the world on YouTube. They have since been arrested.
Then, there's a whale that washes up, also in New Jersey, that YES, is already dead, but people decide to spray graffiti all over it, no doubt laughing the entire time.
I ask you, as a fellow human being, and someone who is very small to the world, what gives us the right or craving to harm innocent creatures, or humiliate them? Why do we feel like we are invincible and take the bigger picture for granted? It really, really makes me feel down somedays.
Please promise me one thing - ANYTIME you see an animal being treated in a harmful or wrong manner, be big enough to STEP UP and say "NO" and let the person or people know "No, that's not cool" and "why would you do that?" If that gets no resolution, call somebody to make sure it will.
We will never be able to stop animal cruelty - that's a hard pill to swallow.
However, if we each do our part, we can greatly reduce the amount of this stuff that goes on.
The above is NOT my house. But it may as well be, with all of the damn holes in the ground and mud and shovels and dust that there is, EVERYWHERE. You see, my house has been shifting ever since I bought it (a structural engineer found out it started a month AFTER I bought it - just my luck). What that means is that floors are squeaking; doors are sticking shut; floors are moving up and downhill; they sometimes are angled down. Cracks on walls, structure, etc. I HAD to fix this - 12 piers. One pier every six feet, where they dig underground 6-8 feet and put it downward, and then up onto the house to hold it in place for life. The pier is made out of steel and concerete.
This has taken all week and the big lift is tomorrow, where all at a time, the 12 piers are pumped upward 1-2 inches to stablize the house. I wonder how KC and Tippy the cats will take it? Maybe they'll think they're at Worlds of Fun and its the Timerwolf (the classic, my favorite ride)!
Wish me luck (especially paying this repair off!!!) and I'll talk to you on the air again Friday, as I'm out for that tomorrow!
That's what a "study" done by Estately says, as they analyzed Facebook pages from random people in each state and determined who was the "geekiest" by what they talked about in their feeds. Apparently Kansas came in as the 12th "nerdiest state" in America (Missouri was 21st). That's because Kansas citizens spoke a lot about things like Magic, The Gathering (card game), Harry Potter, etc.
We talked about this on this afternoon's "5 O'Clock Sound Off" and I was shocked to hear how many women admitted that they have dated a man they don't find physically attractive... at all. Even sexy, smoking hot studs like the one above!!!
To be serious, it seems difficult for me to comprehend how you could be with somebody you weren't physically attracted to. I mean, I understand that we can all be honest and that while looks are subjective, it's fairly well agreed upon that certain individuals are better looking than others. So obviously, someone like me can admit that I'm a 6 on a 1-10 look scale and as such, typically date a girl in the 6-7 range, as well. So in that regard, I can understand saying your partner isn't perhaps the most "BEAUTIFUL" outside, as defined by society. BUT, with that said, I think you have to be attracted to the person you're with to truly love them. That's NOT the most important thing, but if you don't think they're attractive, how do you feel comfortable being seen with them? Going out? Where's the flame? How does the physical stuff work?
Further, I definitely think someone can get a patner hook line n sinker from their personality, character, etc. (the truly IMPORTANT things). But they'd have to at least be tolerable to look at, right?
Anyway, the above stat being confirmed by KC women just floored me. But hey, if that's the case, maybe I need to start setting my sights on Mila Kunis?? :)
I was hoping we would be present to see this happen before her show in KC, but George Brett was unavailable to meet the 17 year old superstar!
Some background, in case you don't know, is that the song "Royals" (that first put Lorde on the map) was based on a photo Lorde saw in National Geographic... of none other than GEORGE BRETT signing autographs back in the late 70's. It turns out Lorde collected old National Geographics growing up, and the word ROYALS was on George's shirt... that prompted her to say, "hey, that's a cool word, let's write a song about it."
So finally, the two met last night in Las Vegas! How cool is that?!?!
By now this is old news, being that it happened a whole ten minutes ago. HAHA (gotta love social media and how quickly it spreads like wildfire). But Miley is cancelled for tonight in KC, due to a "severe allergic reaction" that led to hospitilization.
So while its sad she's cancelled, let's send her our best. Now is no time to speculate on "excuses" or "made up stories" as I see many doing - we have no idea what exactly is going on her life, what she's facing, how her health is, etc. and believe me, she DID NOT want to disappoint her fans and miss out on the payday. I'm just sad it looks like there won't be a make-up date (although that's not for certain yet).
So she's cancelled, but let's wish her speedy recovery, AND let's turn our attention to watching the Royals tonight as they break their losing streak in Houston. :)
I'm sure if you're a Royals fan, you saw second baseman Omar Infante get DRILLED in the CHIN by an 89 MPH fastball on Monday night. He went down right away, blood was everywhere and it seemed that everyone agreed that he would be out 2 months with a broken jaw or at the least, out 10 days with a concussion.
Fast forward to today, when Infante is (as of right now) in the ROYALS LINEUP tonight, just four days later! He will have to wear a batting helmet with a jaw pad and more than that, deal with the mental side of stepping in with a still severely bruised and aching jaw, and I'm sure, a battered brain, too. Infante is a brave man and here's to him staying healthy the rest of the year!
Glad you're a Royal, Omar!
Have a good weekend KC and let's hope the Royals can SWEEP the Twins this weekend!
I attempted to write this yesterday but somehow, the post didn't go through.
So let's try this again, with the latest on the "KC Highway Shooter" which is gaining national attention.
At this point, police believe there might be as many as TWENTY shootings done by the same shooter(s), mainly in the Grandview Triangle area of 435/470/71. Police aren't sure whether all shots have been fired from moving vehicles or if perhaps the shooter(s) are off road somewhere hiding. One common theme is that nearly all shootings are happening near on and off ramps, where the shooter(s) can shoot and quickly veer off one way or the other. Extremely scary.
Kudos to the KC police, FBI and others in joining together to find this/these creep(s). It's pretty scary that you can't even drive home on public highways without having some moron shoot at you. For someone like me, especially, and the thousands of other KC area residents who pass that way each day, it definitely makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Here's to finding the IDIOT(S) responsible for this soon - and here's a picture in the meantime for the moron(s) doing this.
This actually makes me really, really sad. Because I know exactly what Miley is going through after dealing with the loss of the late, great Mama Kiki in 2007. She had been my cat since 1991, so for 16 years. I can't imagine losing either of my current cats, KC and Tippy. Dread that thought and day.
This might seem like a ridicolous thing to write about, but I find the power of a smile to be amazing.
First of all, on a receiving end, it makes me feel good when somebody takes the time to make eye contact and smile. It's not even something that I often realize is happening to me; but subconsciously, that does A LOT in helping us to feel better about ourselves, our lives, our days.
So naturally, why not flip it around and start doing it to someone else? SMILE at them! Ask how they are, even if you don't really care. Make them feel important. If you have down time and are stuck sitting next to someone while waiting in line, or for an elevator, or a walk light... strike up a conversation. Why not?
This is the most basic premise of "random acts of kindness" and really, the most easy one to achieve.
I'll close with a story... the last several weeks, I've gone into Subway to get a salad every Tuesday as I head into work at a certain Subway that I'm only by on Tuesday's. The first couple of weeks, I noticed an employee who seemed run down, tired, angry, sad... not happy... And so I decided by the third time this was consistent and I should try to make him feel better - let him know there ARE good people and things in the world, and that people DO care. Even if its basic and nothing huge.
So the last few weeks, I've been smiling at him and being very positive and upbeat, and asking him questions. Slowly, he's warmed up. And now, he smiles and is happy and talkative when I come in. Just from taking a few seconds to make him feel like somebody cares.
We interact with people like this every single day without even realizing it. There are situations where we're around people for short amounts of time and we can't avoid that. So next time, instead of saying nothing and looking at your phone or thinking, "not my problem, loser," do the right thing and ask how they are... what's new... talk about the weather... and most of all...
Mike Pelfrey is a starting pitcher for the Minnesota Twins, who has had a nice and long career with a lot of success! But this moment could be described as a #Fail for him!
Click below and watch Pelfrey's Minnesota Twin teammates completely own and "punk" him... You see, he went to Wichita State, who was playing Kentucky on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament. His teammates decided to have the manager join in on this, calling him into the office to "call Wichita as a celebrity graduate of the school and pump them up." What ensues is classic!
It is so completely tragic - the news that "there are no surivors" with Flight 370, which is somewhere at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
Not only tragic for the completely obvious reasons - the plane being intentionally crashed and innocent lives lost - but also for the fact that this all makes NO SENSE. At all.
And the scary thing is, we probably will NEVER KNOW exactly what happened, who wrecked it or what the motives were, especialy if the black box can't be found in the next week or so. Let's hope like heck that it is!
It is easy for all of us to say, "Well, that's sad, but its a half a world away, and that would never happen in America. Sad but it'll never be us - that only happens to somebody else."
But I hope you won't fall into that trap and instead, will join me in focusing on what this is - a complete and utter tragedy, one that deserves all of our strength and prayers going out to those involved and their families, friends and loved ones. Only human support will get those touched directly by this through it.
That's the rumor, although there are conflicting reports all over the Internet.
Speaking of Cobain, hard to believe its been almost TWENTY YEARS since his tragic death. I'm starting to feel old!!!
We played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on "Oh No You Didn't" this afternoon and it reminded me just how talented and cutting edge Nirvana was. It's sad never being able to know exactly how much bigger they would have become and how much unreleased music and stories we never got to here.
So let's get this straight. If the Duke University mens basketball team wins the national title, one of their "famous" alums will do WHAT?!?! Check out this fantastic video. And by the way, I'm a college campus dork. When I lived on the east coast I tried to visit every Division I basketball schools' campus that I came near. I made it to like 28. Duke was BY FAR the most BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS I have ever been on. If you ever get a chance to visit, DO!
Okay, the guy no doubt has problems. I'm not trying to make light of them because they're serious and not funny. But at some point, you have to stop blaming others, situations and things "out of your control" and start taking control and charge of your life. And Chris is NOT doing it.Arrested. AGAIN?!?!?
Pattie Mallette, whom I once hit on for an entire night at Z Strike in the Power & Light District, has recorded herself singing a song... that her son Justin wrote for her! Apparently the tune was a Christmas present and she performed it with Justin's harmony included in recent weeks. Pretty cool and finally some good news for 'The Biebs' as he tries to stop the bleeding and repair his image!
And I hope he can. :( I have no idea what the background is of their marriage, if it was a mutual split, if he's in the wrong or she's in the wrong... but that's not important. What is important is that they are both hurting and going through a traumatic event, and that's always sad to see, especially when there is a child involved (three year old Julian). The pair have been married since 2005 and always seemed so happy together - so let's hope if this was meant to work, they will still be able to salvage it!
This girl ROCKS!!! 5'2, 130, bangin' with the big boys as a running back in the trenches of arena football! While I'm a little nervous for her at that size playing with 250 pound men, this is good to see and I hope she continues to chase her dreams and inspire women everywhere.
Let me start by saying I think it is FANTASTIC that Sam "came out" publicly and got that "burden" off of him. In addition, I'm happy to see UMKC accepting such students, too (see below link). So one side of me is so happy to finally see America realizing that it's none of our business and it doesn't really matter who someone loves - as long as they're happy and not doing any harm to anyone.
But that also makes me sad, that even in 2014, we spend days and days and days covering the same stories - about someone's sexual orientation. How is this news? It's not, and I look forward to the day we view it as such.
I am hot (excited) and cold (disappointed) in my boy Diddy! First of all, the hot - we heard news over the weekend that he was engaged to pop singer Cassie. If you remember her as the singer of the club banger "U and Me" in 2005, you'd be correct! I always loved Cassie and am excited that they are together and happy. I guess he no longer needs a girl girl girl to call his wife.
However, I am cold because of what he did to a server. See below - but come on!!! Even I, making NO MONEY, tip 25% and take care of servers because I realize that an extra couple of dollars means a heck of a lot more to them than me. Come on Diddy!!!
By the way, I interviewed her back in 2007 and she was AWESOME. She's from San Diego and we spent the majority of the interview doing "Anchorman" and Ron Burgundy impressions! Very cool chick. She's looking great and definitely becoming her own woman. No longer the "High School Musical Days" fo sho!
She's separating and divorcing from her husband, Mike Comrie of the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. I have always admired Hillary for being down to earth and doing things the "right way" so this is sad to hear. The only good news? She's 26 and was with a 33 year old. And I happen to know an afternoon DJ in Kansas City who is also 33............ #Hmmmmmm
The below linked story just makes me COMPLETELY sick... and I'll be the to admit that I HATE opposums... They are ugly, creepy animals that often times live in the sewer and carry disease. Gross. But if they aren't in your house or a threat to you, they're in their HABITAT. They are one of God's creatures and are put here for a reason. They're part of the food chain, yes, and at times, maybe they DO need to be removed. But why anyone would feel it's acceptable to burn and torture and kill an innocent animal like this and film it on the Internet is beyond me. Truly sick. I don't care if it's a dog, cat, opposum, raccoon, tiger, blue jay, cardinal, fox... No animal deserves to be tortured by man. We live in their world, too, and their natural habitat is outside. This story infuriates me.
And isn't going to smoke it... he camped out, waited, waited some more, and bought the marijuana to SAVE IT in a safe, then donate someday to 'a museum because it's "history." He did say, however, that he smoked some from his personal collection later in the day to commemorate the occasion. Is this our very own Intern Hempnecklace Sean?!?!
*** BELOW *** A picture of weeds... but not THAT kind of weed. These are dandelion weeds.
With work getting slammed and many going on vacation starting as early as today, I wanted to make one final entry before the craziness of next week and wish you and your family HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! I want you to know it means a lot to me that you spend time with me each afternoon and that you even take time to read this. I am nothing without you and I'll never forget that! I hope we can spend at least three more years together, as I'll have more details on soon. Until then, Happy Holidays, take care and God Bless!!!
It's only a matter of time, I feel like, until they're engaged and married! From industry "insiders" that I know, they are VERY much in love and it should happen soon. Here's to continued success for both of them - I think they genuinely make each other happy. So cool to see them on stage together, too!!!
I spent three hours writing this tonight and would appreciate you taking five minutes to read it.
It's boring in parts but I promise the payoff is there if you love animals.
I'd appreciate you sharing so that we can continue to spread the word
about the amazing animals without voices that are feral/stray/sheltered
and are just waiting for a chance.
Please enjoy "The Cat That Nobody Wanted."
The cat that nobody wanted wasnât even the cat that I wanted.
In fact, she was choice number three, and a distant three at that.
As Iâd later find out, Florida had more feral cats per capita than
any other state, so it made sense that Iâd see her entire family scurry
throughout the intercoastal apartment complex I lived in most nights
during that summer of 2008 when returning home from work at midnight. Of
course, the fact that I fed them helped, too.
But letâs introduce you to the cast, which initially began with two.
First there was the white tomcat Sting, whose meow announced his
presence with authority. Sting was mischievous, always on top of a car
hood or sitting above the apartment complex gate. I always worried Sting
would get picked up by animal control, as he was the boldest and
bravest of the feral crew. But luckily, while I was there, he never did.
One funny story sticks out about Sting, and itâs one that Iâll take with me the rest of my life.
It must have been a heat index of 105 one late Jacksonville
afternoon, and I was coming home from a workout at World Gym on Beach
As I pulled into the complex, I saw Sting laying on the ground in a helpless manner near the community mailboxes.
âOh my gosh,â I thought. âSting is dying. He needs water. Or a vet.
But I have to work in an hour. I donât have time. What do I do?â
As it turned out, I opted for the worst possible solution â to run
and get my kitten KCâs carrying case, so I could put Sting in it and
then decide where to take him AFTER that fact.
Problem was, as I arrived back with the case, he scurried into some
bushes and when I reached for him, bit my hand, just as he should have,
this strange giant potentially impeding on his life.
Long story short, Sting ended up being just fine, but I ended up
getting a tetanus shot at my doctor (after being laughed at
hysterically) and was told if I didnât see Sting alive in three days, I
had to have rabies treatments, which would cost a ton of money and cause
sheer amounts of pain.
Luckily, that white SOB that I loved so much would show up from time
to time, so I knew I was safe, but the visits to my apartment became
less and less, right as cat number two started visiting more.
To this day, I have no idea why I never gave cat number two a true
name. I never even thought to, even though I had decided to try and keep
Cat number two was older than a kitten, but not quite an adult, with
short grey hair. She was extremely sweet and affectionate. Looking back,
I should have known that cat number two was being courted by a really
pretty girl downstairs who used to have a lot of parties. Iâll never
know for sure, but I think she might have been a stripper. Just
intuition on my part â nothing wrong with being a woman of the night!
Anyway, cat number two became familiar with feeding time and would
join Sting when Iâd get home from work. After Iâd feed her, Iâd want to
give her attention because she was so damn precious. Being a good cat
owner to KC (who was near one year old at this point), I couldnât take
her in my apartment, so I would take her to my Ford Escape and pat her
for a good 20 or 30 minutes a night, before going back inside and
watching the DVRâed Royals game.
I should probably say that at this point, I was just becoming a cat
fanatic. I had one cat before KC, an outdoor cat we fed during childhood
named âMama Kiki.â I loved that cat more than anything and had her the
last two years of her life during my final days in Charlotte and first
days in Jacksonville. I had to put her down one night after I returned
home from work and sheâd had a stroke. I got KC a few months later as a
kitten and swore Iâd never adopt another cat. One was enough and two
would make me a âcat ladyâ and âundateableâ in my mind. But my heart, of
course, knew differently, as when I was feeding these cats, Iâd lie
with my head and say, âIâll just feed them and then trap them and get
them homes.â But deep down, I knew Iâd be adding to my family and
adopting one, just like Mama Kiki all of those years earlier.
Anyway, after awhile, cat number two began showing up less and less,
and one day I saw her going outside from the stripperâs porch
downstairs. âDuh,â I thought. âSheâs so tame because sheâs being fed and
is someoneâs pet.â
To confirm, I then asked the girl (weâll call her âLolaâ since I
donât know her name) if she was feeding the cat and taking care of it or
if I should. She said, âNo, Iâm adopting that cat, thatâs on me, donât
worry about it!â (I then asked for a lap dance. Kidding. That part
didnât happen. Just wanted to make sure you were still reading.)
Mildly heartbroken, I realized that sweet cat number two would not be
adopted by me, but luckily right around that same time, one other cat
began showing up for dinnertime â a cat Iâd seen before, but one that
was very, very wild and hung out with the feral cats that didnât dare
get close to me. This cat was the obvious (much wilder) sister to sweet
cat number two! She was the exact same grey and size/age, but was a long
haired cat (versus short) and very scraggly. She had the bushiest and
Even as I began feeding cat number three a half can of wet food a
night, she three was very, very timid and very, very scared of me,
UNLESS I was sitting completely down on the concrete. If so, she would
allow me to get within a few feet while I fed her and by night three, I
scratched her head the first time.
The funny thing is, I had flashbacks to Sting when cat number three
let me pat her â because she kind of jumped up at my hand but instead of
biting me, to my extreme amusement, got on her back feet/hind legs and
walked like a human being up to my hand.
I didnât even hesitate.
âYour name is Tippy. You walk on your tippy toes. Youâre Tippy.â
From that night on, Tippy began to trust me a lot more and by night
five, she began sleeping outside of my door as she waited for me to come
home from work each night. I can still remember how happy my heart was
as I walked toward her the first night and saw that â thatâs when she
officially âadopted meâ and vice versa. It made me so happy!
At the same time, I was a bit nervous, because I always wondered if
the apartment neighbors were getting pissed that all these cats were
hanging around. I couldnât have totally blamed them if they were, but
that made me scared, so I quickly found a local organization called âCat
Angelsâ that would spay, give cats their shots, check for diseases,
etc. for a discounted price if you swore to foster the cat and never let
it back outside. I decided I needed to quickly do this just in case
someone called Animal Control with as predictable as Tippyâs behavior
was coming. She was always waiting for me and had that same loud meow
that Sting (her brother or Dad) had.
Anyway, as fate would have it, while I was waiting two more days to
meet the lady from âCat Angelsâ to drop Tippy off, I was driving a
rental car for some reason (some repair on my Escape). When I dropped it
off at the Enterprise office on Atlantic Blvd., this really pretty girl
informed me that she was my neighbor and lived downstairs. Not the
stripper, a different girl that I wasnât aware of. I couldnât believe it
â what a small world!!
Nervously, I decided to ask, just to see what sheâd say: âAre you one of the girls that feeds those cats?â
Her male co-worker began cracking up while she blushed and confirmed
that yes, she was a âcat lady.â I couldnât believe it â hereâs a
neighbor of mine in a city of 1.2 million people who also feeds the
cats!!! She knew about Sting and cat number two and loved them both, but
when I asked her about cat number three, my Tippy, she said:
âThat long haired cat with the bushy tail? Itâs so annoying!! It runs away and it is loud and wild. Annoying.â
I remember smiling to myself and thinking, âOne personâs loss in another personâs gain. Thatâs my Tippy!â
A day and a half later, on the eve of the morning Iâd take Tippy to
PetSmart to meet the lady from âCat Angels, â I arrived home from work
and Tippy was nowhere to be found.
âGreat,â I thought.
Luckily, I knew exactly where sheâd be â in the bushes downstairs, where as far as I know, she lived.
I called Tippy and she quickly came out of the bushes, followed me
upstairs and boom, I fed her inside of my apartment. She never hesitated
coming inside that first time â a starving cat must eat!
At the same time, I locked KC in a different part of the apartment so
they wouldnât have any contact, eventually got Tippy into the bathroom
and the next morning, took her to PetSmart, where she must have had the
worst day of her life.
Here was this feral cat inside of a cat carrier, completely trapped,
and going to be that way for several hours until the lady at âCat
Angelsâ could take her north to Amelia Island where she would be taken
care of and watched after for a couple of days inside of a cage. That
Those two days were long as I waited for Tippy to return but
eventually, she came home with me when I met the lady at the ferry of
Mayport, which is the naval base in Jacksonville. Tippy was in that same
old cat carrier and I remember her being VERY quiet on the drive home.
Once home, she took refuge in my bathroom, where she lived the first
four or five days with me. KC would hiss and scratch at the door,
obviously unhappy, but Tippy never reacted. She was too sweet and too
happy to have a home and surprisingly, not very scared in the bathroom.
Eventually, it was time to socialize KC and Tippy, so I began feeding
them on opposite sides of the door so theyâd associate each otherâs
smell with something good (food). I also switched the blankets they
slept on regularly with each other so theyâd get used to each otherâs
The day I decided to introduce them to each other, KC hissed and
growled and was not happy. Tippy just backed off and minded her own
business. She just wanted to be friends and didnât understand why KC was
being so territorial! My Mom said, âDavid, this isnât going to work.â I
said, âYes it will, trust me. KC showed interest in all of the cats
when Iâd feed them and likes them, itâll just take a few days.â
Luckily, I was completely right and within a week, the two were best
friends. They remain that way today and Iâm pretty sure KC (who is
probably a year older than Tippy and much bigger) believes that Tippy is
her kitten. She cleans her nonstop, watches after her and the reverse
Both KC and Tippy are my best friends. They wait for me each night at
the bottom of the steps when I get home. They follow me around. They
sleep with me. They love attention and love to play. They are AWESOME
animals. I couldnât ask for better companions.
As I finish this on Thanksgiving Eve 2013, I canât help but think of
how awesome Tippy has become and how lucky I was to have her adopt me.
Any of her two relatives would have been great cats too but it was her,
the third choice, the âannoying catâ and the cat that nobody wanted that
has become the best pet you could ever imagine.
I firmly believe Tippy is eternally grateful and thankful for me and I
can tell you that the feeling is mutual. She has the nicest heart you
can ever find on any creature â I mean that. She wouldnât harm a fly.
All she wants to do is love you and be loved.
Tippy is still fairly scared of anyone that comes over and anyone she
doesnât know, and she still wants to hide when it rains or thunders,
even six years later. Sheâll run underneath the sink and open the
cabinets and hide from storms/threats, unless sheâs within a foot of me
during all such events, where I can âprotect herâ from it (in her mind).
I am thankful for a lot on this day of reflection, and Tippy is right
at the top of that list, as are the countless amount of
underappreciated animal volunteers who run organizations like âCat
Angelsâ and help save innocent animals day after day, week after week,
month after month, year after year.
Iâm also thankful that you stayed with me and read this story, and I
hope it helps you realize how many poor animals are out there that need
homes, both in shelters and otherwise. Just you caring enough to read
this shows me you are ready for that next step â saving a cat or dog.
So next time you see a wild cat or dog, consider helping it, whether
that be feeding and taming to take to an organization to foster, or
whether that be you adopting. Or go to your local animal shelter and
adopt one â there are thousands that are stuck in a cage and just need a
chance to blossom. Let them love you the way Tippy does.
In closing, sometimes I like to think back to those hot summer nights
in Jacksonville, a place Iâve never been back to since I moved to
Kansas City on January 1st, 2009. I like to wonder what happened to
Tippyâs brothers, sisters and parents (and there were lots).
Perhaps and probably all went the way of most feral cats â eventually
dead from disease, run over by a car or picked up by animal control.
But maybe theyâre still out there, out amongst the palm trees and
humidity, out in that same parking lot at night, chasing each other
around like when they were young and just waiting for a two-legged
creature to take the time to notice them and give them a chance.
I hope you can join me this year in pausing and reflecting on the things we DO HAVE instead of what we DON'T. I feel like that, plus family, is what Thanksgiving is all about. So this year, I invite you to join me in being thankful for the things we do have and at the same time, doing what we can to help others who DON'T have what we have. It's all about being thankful and giving. Happy Thanksgiving from myself, KC and Tippy to you and yours!!!
This is a MUST watch... A couple of things come to mind. First, the parakeet seems really tame, as does the cat... but why on earth is this owner letting two tamed and (seemingly) loved pets do this? Even if the cat is declawed, it will eventually bite and attack the cat in a playful fashion (in its head). The second thing that comes to mind is wow... what a BRAVE parakeet. This is a classic video.
