STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS: by MR Movies Wes Horner

Star Trek Into Darkness is J.J. Abrams' second installment into the reboot of the Star Trek series. It stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Zoe Saldana. In this film, the crew of the Enterprise embarks on a mission to track down a terrorist after a massive attack on Star Fleet. This film is amazing! It's non-stop action from start to end. Any brief lulls were filled with comedy and insights adding to the depth of the characters. The acting was great. I really like Chris Pines as the young Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto is great as Spock, but Benedict Cumberbatch takes the cake as the terrorist. He's a great actor and really added a lot to this film. The visual and special effects were fantastic and although, I don't think one would necessarily need to see this movie in 3D to enjoy it, I'd recommend it. I was simply blown away by how much fun I had watching this movie.I enjoyed J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek quite a bit, but in my opinion, this one topped it.Everyone will like this movie. Just go see it! I can easily give this film an "A".Best regards,

The Top Seven Fights We Have on Road Trips: by Rocket

FULL STORY: According to a new survey, 77% of people say they look forward to taking road trips with their family or their significant other. BUT . . . they also admit that road trips almost ALWAYS lead to at least a little fighting. Here are the top seven fights people have during road trips . . . 1. Driving skills. That includes everything from driving too slowly or tailgating, to changing lanes too much. 2. The temperature in the car. 3. Directions. 4. Where to eat. 5. Swearing at other drivers or flipping them off. 6. The volume in the car. That includes everything from whether or not to blast the radio to the kids shouting at each other. 7. Smoking.

JACK REACHER

Jack Reacher was released on DVD this week. This film stars Tom Cruise as a homicide investigator working to solve a case of a sniper who shot 5 victims at random.

When I saw the previews for this movie, I had a feeling it would be cheesy and a fun film to laugh at... and it was. So it you want a good laugh without watching a comedy, check it out.

MIND GAMES :Candy Crush #1

It turns out playing video games won’t necessarily turn your brain to mush. In fact, it could be good for you! Research has found that playing computer games may help keep your brain sharp and prevent aging-related cognitive decline. In some cases, it may even reverse these effects. Other studies have shown a link between computer games and lower levels of depression. In related news, Candy Crush Saga has beat out Angry Birds as the most popular game on Facebook and mobile devices. More than 15 million people play Candy Crush on Facebook every day. Whether it’s making them smarter is yet to be seen. Do you play computer games? Which ones? Do you think games help keep your brain sharp? Do you play Candy Crush? What’s your favorite game to play on your mobile device?

42 starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford

I finally had a chance to see '42', the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play major league baseball. It stars Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford.

This film isn't perfect by any means, but the story is so important and fascinating, it's a must see. I feel that what Robinson went through was probably much worse than what was portrayed on the screen, but it was nice to get an overview of how he became the legend he is today.

At times I wanted to jump out of my seat and scream for Jackie to take action against his persecutors, but the way he bridled his emotions and let his ability do the talking, was simply inspiring. I can only imagine the type of man he must have been.

Boseman, a newcomer to the big screen, was a good choice to play Jackie Robinson. He did a good job of encapsulating Robinson with his look and even how he ran and hit. I was also impressed by Harrison Ford's performance as Branch Rickey, the President of the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was refreshing to see Ford immerse himself into a role like he did in this movie.

I was truly inspired by this film and I believe anyone who watches it will like it. Go see it!!!

LOVE DON’T COST A THING (BUT DIVORCE DOES: by Rocket

LOVE DON’T COST A THING (BUT DIVORCE DOES) An over-the-top wedding could cost you more than just thousands of dollars. Many couples who celebrate their nuptials with extravagant events end up getting divorced- and citing the expense as a reason for their split. Eight out of 10 couples who divorce within five years after tying the knot blame the excessive cost of the wedding. Experts say that once the big day is past and reality sets in, the stress of paying off wedding debts can be hard on relationships. The only thing worse than blowing six figures on your wedding? Having to spend the same amount on a divorce attorney a few years later. What do you think of expensive, over-the-top weddings? How much did your wedding cost? How much is too much to spend on a wedding? Do you think financial pressures can put strain on relationships? FLIGHT RISK

The Great Gatsby - Review by Mr. Movies

THE GREAT GATSBY

The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, and Joel Edgerton. It was directed by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, Australia).

This film is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famed novel The Great Gatsby. It is the story of Nick Carraway (Maguire), an aspiring writer, who moves to New York to work as a bondsman. Nick becomes intrigued by his mysterious and wealthy neighbor, Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio). Gatsby invites Nick to one of his lavish parties in order to reconnect with Nick's cousin, Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan).

If you're a huge fan of the book and expect no liberties to be taken from the story, you will not be happy about this film.
That being said, if you want to see an all around great movie and have an open mind to Baz Luhrmann's style, you'll love this movie. The sets, the color, the cars, and the costumes were fantastic. I even liked how they mixed the modern music with the musical styles of the roaring twenties (which may be a turn off for some).

The acting was good all around, but Leonardo DiCaprio was great. He seems to get better with every role he plays and he was a wonderful fit for Gatsby.

This was a great love story, filled with romance, mystery, thrills and extravagance. At a run time of 142 minutes, I never felt like it was too long and in my opinion, it was paced perfectly.

I do feel like you will miss out if you don't see it in 3D. With the lavish colors and sets, it really makes you feel like you're there and I recommend spending a few extra bucks catch this one in 3D.

It's funny, I heard a lot of bad things about this film before I had a chance to see it, but as the movie progressed, I was hard pressed to find anything I didn't like about it. I enjoyed it from beginning to finish.

You will like this if you liked Moulin Rouge! or Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. On a side note, I do think it's geared towards a younger crowd. I give this movie an "A".

PIGGY BANK ROBBERS: by Rocket

PIGGY BANK ROBBERS Now this is just sad! Almost half of American parents admit to taking money from their children’s savings accounts- and more than 50% don’t even feel bad about it! Most people said they dipped into their kids’ savings to pay bills, but others used the dough for family vacations and gifts. Of the parents who claim they’ve never done such a thing, more than 30% said they’d consider it in the event of a medical emergency. And then there are the 46% of parents who have never stolen money from their kids’ accounts…because they haven’t even started accounts for their kids. We’re not sure what’s worse! Would you ever take money from your kids’ accounts? Under what circumstances? Have you ever done this? What did you use the money for?

Will.i.am's "#willpower" Reflects Lack of Creativity :by Emily Katz

While listening to Will.i.am's newest album, "#willpower," it took just that.. a great deal of will power... to get through each song.

I kept thinking, "maybe the next song will be better." That was not the case. The melodies and beats of the songs on this album all sound extremely similar.

Although I'm not a fan of this album, I will say that Will.i.am knows how to create a good beat.
What do you call 15 songs in a row that sound exactly the same? Will.i.am's newest album "#willpower"

Up Close & Personal with Hunter Hayes

When I first heard Hunter Hayes, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed his music. I'm not a big country music fan at all, so this is totally out of my element...but who can resist a catchy pop-country hook?!

Wednesday afternoon, I had the chance to see Hunter perform a short acoustic set at the Kill Devil Club. In between songs, he talked to fans and expressed his gratitude toward them each time. He seemed like a genuinely nice, humble, guy.

Hunter played three songs: "Somebody's Heartbreak," his first number one hit "Wanted," and his newest single, "I Want Crazy." He sounded just as good (if not better) live as he does recorded. With his wide vocal range, he hit each note flawlessly.

Check out the deluxe version of his debut album, "Hunter Hayes [Encore]," which includes all of the songs off the original album PLUS new music, available June 18th.

IRON MAN 3 by MR MOVIES

Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Ben Kingsley. Shane Black has taken over as the director instead of Jon Favreau in this installment of the series.

This film starts out at a fairly slower pace than the previous two, but builds as it goes and keeps getting better and better.

In this one, Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) is called upon by the public to deal with a sinister terrorist who calls himself Mandarin (Kingsley). At the same time, Stark struggles with extreme anxiety attacks as he tries to deal with the recent events of saving mankind from the other worldly villains in The Avengers.

The acting was top notch. Robert Downey Jr. was great as always, and spends more time out of his Iron Man suit in this one than the previous two Iron Man films. Guy Pearce was a good addition to the series. He was a perfect villain and was fun to hate. Ben Kingsley, easily one of the greatest actors of our time, was amazing in this film. He will most definitely take you by surprise and his performance alone makes this movie worth seeing.

The action and special effects were great. The story, although slow at times, was interesting, had great comic relief and a big payoff at the end.

Go see this movie if you liked any of the other Marvel Comics movies such as Thor, The Avengers or the other two Iron Man movies. Whether or not you see it in 3D, you'll enjoy this one. I give this picture an "A-".

Also, be sure to stay all the way through the credits.

Your New Favorite Artist: Andrew McMahon

Today, Andrew McMahon released his debut solo EP, “The Pop Underground.” Now you’re probably thinking, “Who?!” Andrew McMahon fronted pop/punk band Something Corporate and piano/rock band Jack’s Mannequin. Still not ringing a bell? That’s probably because he has never had a radio hit with any of his musical projects. But don’t let that fool you. This guy is the full package.

Despite no radio airplay, McMahon has had an extremely successful musical career and has gained an enormous fan base over the past decade through extensive worldwide touring and with music that appeals to a diverse audience. He also consistently puts on one of the most amazing live shows I’ve ever seen (more on that later).

I’m being completely honest when I say that there isn’t a song Andrew McMahon has written that I don’t enjoy, whether it be for Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, or his solo music. This man is a brilliant songwriter, musician, and performer. His passion is heard through each song and each performance.

His solo EP, “The Pop Underground,” is now available on iTunes. He will be in Kansas City on June 21st with Allen Stone and O.A.R at The Crossroads. You don’t want to miss this show!

I’ll leave you with a sample of music from each of McMahon’s musical projects (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, & Andrew McMahon).

Pain & Gain movie review by Mr. Movie Wes Horner

Pain & Gain

"Pain & Gain" is true story of a gang of bodybuilders who kidnap a wealthy businessman in order to take all of his money and assets. It was directed by Michael Bay and stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie and Tony Shaloub.

Although the previews for this movie make it appear to be a fun and action packed comedy, I found it to be highly disturbing, anti-climactic, and frustrating. The fact that this film was based on a true story is disheartening, mainly from knowing the fact that people can be so stupid in real life.

The film started out pretty good, but as it progressed, it became more and more sickening and to be completely honest, I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Everyone in the film did a good job and Tony Shaloub was, in my opinion, the best thing about it. Unfortunately, good acting can't make up for a story like this one. The cinematography was strange with odd camera angles and shaky shots that made it difficult to see what was taking place at times.

I can't think of anyone to whom I would recommend this movie. I think maybe if you liked "Very Bad Things", you might like it (might).

I give this movie a "D". Which is disappointing as I thought it looked pretty good.

This story is awesome! Listen to Mix 93.3 to win 1D and Money Free!

One Direction's North American summer tour may have just become a little more interesting. According to "The Mirror," the boys are reportedly looking to swap their swanky private jets for a customized version of Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine as they tour the U.S. Apparently, Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis spent about 100-thousand dollars to buy an old Volkswagen camper "Mystery Machine" look-a-like that's currently at a shop in England in the process of being pimped out. The new van will reportedly include state-of-the-art plasma screen televisions, individual entertainment consoles and their trademark "1D" logo stamped on the sides.

A source tells the paper that the boys wanted to do something special for U.S. fans, but that it's still not a done deal. The "Mystery Machine" needs to be cleared by their management team, and if it's deemed too impractical to drive from city to city, it won't be used.

MR. LUNCH KC reviews The North Kansas City Cafe

MR. LUNCH KC

I was driving through North Kansas City and saw a sign that said Gyros and Greek salad. The thought of a Gyro sounded pretty good to me, so I stopped. I had been to this building many times before, but never as The North Kansas City Café., and I hope that this one can thrive.

The North Kansas City Café has a wide selection of Greek food and standard American fare. I had the Gyro and Greek Salad. The salad was very fresh and had a nice hint of fresh mint in the Greek dressing. I would have preferred the feta cheese crumbled or chunked rather than shredded however. But that was minor and a total personal preference. The gyro was very good. The gyro meat was thick, moist and flavorful. Some places seem to serve it thin and dried out. They had a lamb burger on the menu. Next time I will try that. Overall the food was very good.

The atmosphere was clean and bright. The server I had was nice and attentive. I counted around 65 table seats so you will have plenty of room. The prices for lunch varied from $6.50 to $10.00, so it won’t break the wallet either. I overheard a conversation saying that they will be opening a bakery in the back shortly.

The North Kansas City Café is a nice alternative to Chappell’s and First Watch for lunch (and is right across the street).

According to a new survey, the average person breaks the law 260 times a year . . . or five times a week. Now, granted, they're all really minor laws . . . but still, illegal is illegal. Here are the top 10 most common laws people break . . .

1. Jaywalking, or crossing after the sign says "Don't Walk."

2. Taking ketchup packets, creamer, or other little single-serving packets from restaurants.

3. Taking supplies from work.

4. Pocketing the money when you get the wrong amount of change.

5. Eating or drinking while driving.

6. Using someone else's wifi.

7. Downloading or watching pirated movies online.

8. Biking on the sidewalk.

9. Downloading pirated music.

10. Using your phone while driving.

The Golden Ox review by Mr Lunch Toby Proctor

The Golden Ox is an old time staple of Kansas City steak houses. But it does a decent lunch business.
They have had some ups and downs over the last 10 years. I think they are back on the upswing. The lunch menu is varied and has everything from a smoked chicken salad to steaks. The service is a little on the slow side, so you will need more than an hour for lunch. But the food is good. I had the steak sandwich medium rare. It was not a real thick cut, but they did a fine job of getting it as close to medium rare as possible. A couple of the people I ate with had the tenderloin sandwich and liked it a lot. Also, the burnt end sandwich got rave reviews. (I was in a group of 7) We did all comment that we miss the backdoor deli they used to have years ago. Prices are between $8 to $15 bucks. As long as you have 90 minutes for lunch, this is a fine place to go. It has a dated look, but that is part of its charm. It is an old time KC tradition.

Pop Music’s Best Kept Secret: Jukebox the Ghost:by Miss Music Emily Katz

Last Thursday night, I ventured up to Lawrence to enjoy a night of dancing and singing to the cheerful indie pop melodies of Jukebox the Ghost, a band out of Washington D.C. who were performing at the Jackpot Music Hall

The indie pop/rock trio, consisting of vocalist/pianist Ben Thornewill, vocalist/guitarist Tommy Siegel, and drummer Jesse Kristin, played to an intimate crowd, humorously interacting with the audience in between songs.

Jukebox the Ghost performed songs off of their three albums, as well as a crowd favorite cover of Queen’s “Somebody to Love.”

They haven’t had a hit on the radio (YET!), so the band has established their fan base over the years through touring with a wide variety of acts, including Ben Folds, the Barenaked Ladies, Jack’s Mannequin, and Motion City Soundtrack.

Check out the music video for their song “Somebody,” which I predict to be the band’s debut single:

Oblivion Review by Mr. Movie Wes Horner

Oblivion

Oblivion takes place in the year 2077. Earth has all but been destroyed by a major war between mankind and alien invaders. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), a drone repairman, must question everything he knows upon the events that take place two weeks prior to his assignment coming to an end.

The film starts out a little slow, but builds with suspense as it goes. It drags a little here and there and almost seemed like it was 3 hours long even though the run time is listed at 126 minutes.

The acting was okay, given the subpar dialogue and cheesy moments. Tom Cruise was his usual self and Morgan Freeman added a nice, but small touch. I didn't really have my expectations too high going into this movie and that set me up for a pleasant surprise. I found the story to be compelling and although not the most unpredictable or original movie ever, I couldn't help but to sit back and enjoy the ride.

The best thing about this movie were the special effects and sound editing. I must say they were fantastic throughout the entire film and made it worth seeing on the silver screen. This is a fun film and I believe audiences will find themselves enjoying it for the most part.

If you liked iRobot, Moon or Promethius, give this movie a try. I would give it a solid "B" maybe even a "B+" because of how good the special effects were.

The Greatest Gift to the Music Industry: The Mowgli’s

By Emily Katz

A strong statement, sure, but I stand by it: The Mowgli’s are the best thing that have happened to the music industry in many decades.

Tuesday night, I had the honor of seeing The Mowgli’s, perform for a sold out crowd at the RecordBar.  The band consists of eight friends from California who came together with the intention of spreading peace and lov e, and their music reflects just that.

This was a hometown show for vocalist and guitarist Colin Dieden, who is originally from Kansas City.

The band kicked off their set with “The Great Divide,” a crowd pumping song about following your dreams.

With their upbeat folk rock/pop melodies and inspiring, yet lighthearted lyrics, the Mowgli’s filled the RecordBar with love and positivity, which was much needed the day after tragedy struck the city of Boston, Massachusetts.  In honor of the victims, the band led the audience in a moment of silence, followed by vocalist and guitarist Michael Vincze bringing his mic stand and guitar into the crowd while the band performed one of their slower tunes, “Carry Your Will.”

They ended the night with their single “San Francisco,” as they danced through the crowd and brought audience members on stage to sing and dance with them.

Through constant crowd interaction, dancing, and positive music, the Mowgli’s brought peace, love, and happiness to Kansas City Tuesday night.

Their EP, titled “Love’s Not Dead,” is available on itunes now.  I have no doubt that the Mowgli’s are going to change the world with their music and passion for spreading love and happiness.

MR. LUNCH KC visits Franks on Southwest Boulevard

MR. LUNCH KC

Do you like a good hot dog? Franks on Southwest Boulevard could be your place. From a traditional dog with mustard and ketchup to a Chihuahua Dog that has beans, onions and cheese sauce. My favorites are the Chicago Dog (mustard, onion, neon green relish, tomatoes, dill pickles, sport peppers and celery salt) and the Sheboygan (sauerkraut and deli mustard). Prices for a regular hot dog start at $2.49 and go up to $6.99 for the extra-large. I usually go with two of the regular. The first time I had two of the next size up and it was too much food. The quality of the hot dogs is good. The real choice is what you are going to put on it. They have 9 choices of hot dogs. Plus they have brats, Italian Sausage, Polish Sausage, veggie brats and hamburgers. Your food is made to order and is served within a few minutes after ordering. The service is quick, very friendly and helpful for those who are not sure what they want. The restaurant is clean and bright.

A few months ago, Franks moved to its new location on Southwest Boulevard from its previous location across from the Golden Ox. This location should be more convenient to more people. It has seating for about 40 people inside and drive up service for those who choose not to eat there. Parking is also pretty easy with both lot and street parking.

Justin Timberlake is back! music by Emily Katz

With his new album ‘The 20/20 Experience,’ Timberlake goes where no artist has ever gone before--cliche, but true. Each track on this album is truly unique.

The opening track, “Pusher Love Girl,” captivates the listener with an intro of orchestral runs that lead up to Timberlake’s vocals.

Next on the album is the debut single, “Suit & Tie Feat. Jay-Z,” an upbeat track that shows off Timberlake’s musical growth, yet still has his signature sound that fans have always loved.

image

The ultimate love ballad on the album is “Mirrors.” The heartfelt lyrics will melt the ladies hearts... I’d be surprised if this isn’t the next single off the album to hit the airwaves!

The closing track on the album, “Blue Ocean Floor,” is an excellent, smooth conclusion to Timberlake’s comeback album. All I can say to listeners is EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. Not just for this track, but for the entire album! Timberlake offers listeners something new and exciting with each track. No matter what type of music you listen to, this album is so eclectic that there is sure to be a song for everyone to love!

Review of "The Place Beyond The Pines" by Wes Horner

"The Place Beyond the Pines" although, interesting, unique and thought provoking, was slightly confusing and drawn out.

This was a story of a motorcycle stunt rider (Ryan Gosling), who turns to robbing banks after finding out a former fling (Eva Mendes) has given birth to his son. This story also follows a young cop and new father (Bradley Cooper) and his struggle to make the right decisions when faced with tough ethical dilemmas. The story concludes by following some of the high school years of the children of Gosling and Bradley's characters.

Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes were perfectly casted and they did a terrific job in this crime drama.

The storytelling and dialogue made it feel very realistic. In the middle of the film, the story took a turn unlike anything I can recollect seeing in any other movies. Had it not been as long and slow, I think I would've liked it significantly more.  I believe this film will be liked by some but will probably disappoint most others. It's not exactly the feel good movie of the year.

It had some exciting moments with the intense one-shot bank robberies and fast paced escapes via motorcycle. I thought the motorcycle stunts and chase scenes were thrilling.

I liked the cinematography and long shots, the drama and acting was great, but due to the pace of the movie, it made it tough for me to give it more than a "B".

If you like "Drive", "Killing Them Softly", or "Bandits", you will probably enjoy this movie.
