Denver Comicon

Well, it is Con time again for me. This week I am flying out to Denver to reunite with my brothers and sisters in Umbrella Corp Denver. No, they are not my biological family, but this incredible group of people look out for each other, share the same love for Umbrella Corp, and do it all in the name of charity. Umbrella Corp Denver is a parody cosplay for charity group that uses costumed appearances and volunteering at charity events to raise money and support the local community, military veterans, and organizations like Wounded Warrior Project. We can be found on FaceBook at:

This time we are supporting Comic Book Classroom whose mission is, "Comic Book Classroom ignites a love of learning, increases literacy, celebrates diversity and builds community through the tools of popular culture and the power of self-expression." Comic Book Classroom is a Colorado-based nonprofit organization that provides free comic book based curriculum which improves literacy and art skills, increases student achievement, and develops personal awareness. Through extensive academic research and personal anecdotes, we have come to understand that comics are a valuable tool in the educational world. The graphic and textual blend used in the comic art form is effective for teaching literacy and arts to all learners, including gifted readers as well as those that may be struggling, resistant, or English Language Learners (ELLs). So, for the newbies out there, what is Denver Comic Con you ask? Well…"DENVER COMIC CON and Literary Conference (DCC) is a three-day family friendly, pop culture fan convention featuring the best in comics along with popular sci-fi and fantasy tv shows, movies, Japanese animation, cosplay (fan-created costumes and costumed skits), toys, gaming, and panel presentations. DCC is a program of the Colorado-based nonprofit Comic Book Classroom." So, basically it is for anyone from the most hardcore comic collector who can quote what page in 1975 something happened to the person who just likes to go watch movies or see costumes. For me? It's a chance to see my friends, admire the work of others, meet some of my favorite scifi stars like Edward James Olmos who played Adama in Battlestar Galactica, Chandler Riggs from The Walking Dead, Eddie McClintock from Warehouse 13 and of course there are also Star Trek actors like a guy named William Shatner, Ponch is just a slight fanboy. Why Denver Comic Con though when we have Planet Comicon in KC? Umbrella Corp Denver. This group of incredible cosplayers steals the show and is exactly why I have fallen in love with cosplay. We have fun, we work hard, we give to charity, we are constantly stepping up our game and working on new projects from Umbrella themed vehicles, to different soldiers, to special characters like Alice, Lupo, and my own Vector…we are family.
There will be many pictures of the events and our shenanigans in Denver and I will post about UCD whenever we are doing something incredible, which is often.

Next time I will be looking at some of the local cosplayers plus a few other favorite lesser known ones and their work on recent movie cosplays.

Have a great week everyone!
