Throughout the days leading up to the Lorde concert, I was definitely excited. Little did I know, however, I was about to witness one of the best, most unique live performances I have ever seen.
Last night, the teenaged pop sensation performed songs off her debut album Pure Heroine in front of a sold out crowd at the Midland. One of the first things I noticed when I got there was that even though Lorde is so young (only 17 years old!), her fans are of all ages… young and old! That is extremely rare at any teen popstar concert, but it shows how versatile she is as an artist.
For roughly an hour, Lorde mesmerized the audience with her performance. She gave off the vibes as though she was performing alone, and the audience did not exist. She exuded passion and energy as she danced across the stage, though the way she moved wasn't what one would typically consider dancing. She was a free spirit, in the zone, letting the music guide her movements. Between songs, she told stories relating her music to the audience, and she frequently expressed her gratitude toward her fans. While she appeared to be in her own world while performing, she was able to create a connection with the audience in between songs.
After the show, I had the honor of meeting Lorde. I was blown away by her humbleness. While I can't speak for the rest of the group in attendance, she definitely made me feel like I had known her forever. She was so welcoming and friendly, despite the fact that she had to have been extremely exhausted after her show. As a group, we chatted about the show and music in general. When Rocket mentioned her tweet about the Westboro Baptist Church (she had suggested people kiss members of the same sex in front of the picketers outside the venue), she said her mom made her delete it in fear of starting a riot! I thought that was pretty funny. Our meeting was short, but she was very down-to-earth and so incredibly sweet!
If you missed the show, be sure to catch her next time she's in town! She's the complete package: an incredible vocalist, performer, and human.
Her album Pure Heroine is available on iTunes.
